3.3.5 Protective treatment. When materials are used in the construction of the
transmitters that are subject to corrosion in salt air or other atmospheric conditions likely to occur
during service use, they shall be protected against such corrosion in a manner that will in no way
prevent compliance with the performance requirements of this specification. The use of any
protective coating that is subject to cracking, chipping, or scaling with age or extremes of
atmospheric conditions shall be avoided.
3.3.6 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered,
or environmentally preferable materials should be used to the maximum extent possible,
provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements, and
promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs.
3.4 Design and construction. The temperature transmitter shall conform to the
requirements contained herein and shall be constructed to withstand the normal strains or jars,
vibrations, and such other conditions incident to shipping, storage, installation, and service
without failure.
3.4.1 Temperature range. The temperature transmitter shall be designed to function
satisfactorily throughout the temperature range -50 °C to 300 °C (-58 °F to 572 °F).
3.5 Performance. The temperature transmitter shall be capable of meeting the test
requirements specified in section 4 when subjected to the following conditions:
a. Temperature: Temperatures ranging from -65 °C to 325 °C (-85 °F to 617 °F).
b. Insulation resistance: Satisfactory insulation resistance when a potential of 100 volts
direct current (VDC) is applied between the connector terminals and any metal part of the
transmitter.
c. Vibration: Vibration testing when performed in accordance with MIL-STD-810,
section 514, category 8. Fi = 350 Hertz.
d. Humidity: Relative humidity up to 100 percent.
e. Fungus: Fungus growth as encountered in tropical climate.
f. Salt spray: Exposure to salt sea atmosphere.
g. Spring load: The applied spring load causing the distance between the temperature
transmitter tip and the cap-base to be a distance of 2.5 inches for the MS24482-1, and 2.0 inches
for the MS24482-2 shall be 2.5 pounds or greater.
3.6 Interchangeability. All parts having the same manufacturer's part number shall be
functionally and dimensionally interchangeable. The drawing number requirements of
MIL-STD-31000 shall govern changes in the manufacturer's part numbers.
