COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
THERMOMETER, SELF-INDICATING, LIQUID IN GLASS (Blood Bank)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This Commercial Item Description covers a low temperature range thermometer for use with blood bank refrigerators.
Salient Characteristics:
Shall be mercury-filled glass stemmed thermometers that are calibrated for total immersion. Shall be of the following type thermometers:
Type I. A thermometer that is marked by the manufacturer with a serialized identification number.
Type II. A thermometer that is not required to be marked with a serialized identification number, but can be supplied with a serialized identification number.
Shall be suitable for use with blood bank refrigerators in checking that the actual chamber temperature is within a required range of +4 degrees Celsius (C) to 16 degrees (C). Shall be suitable for placement in a simulated blood collection bag that is used in a refrigerator chamber to monitor the actual blood temperature.
Shall be graduated in one (1) degree (C) divisions for a range that includes -5 to +20 degrees (C). The graduations shall have an accuracy of +/- degree (C). Etched arrows shall be marked with graduations to indicate a critical range of +4 to +6 degrees (C).
Shall have a glass stem incorporating legible and permanent markings that include the required graduations, Arabic numerals for at least the 0 and 10 degrees (C) divisions, the etched arrows indicating the critical temperature range, and the manufacturer’s name or trademark. The type I thermometer shall also be marked to include a serialized identification number.
